The Gem Stones

At Rocks Couture we want you to fall in love with your jewellery. Each piece is lovingly hand crafted using 9ct and 18ct gold and semi-precious stones, from sparkling blue and white topaz, shimmering lemon and rose quartz to the dark reds of sapphire and emerald of peridot - all interlaced with baroque pearls of the palest hues.

amethyst
Amethyst is the clear purple, mauve or violet form of the mineral quartz and represents the most precious stone within the quartz group. Since purple is considered to be a royal colour, amethyst has long been associated with power, both religious and secular, and historically has been a symbol of sobriety. Amethyst is said to aid creative thinking and spiritual awareness. The richer and deeper the violet colour, the more expensive it is, but a stone of medium colour intensity, with plenty of sparkle, is also very attractive.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
aquamarine
Aquamarine is a transparent form of beryl and ranges in colour from sky blue to the blue-green of the sea. Legend says that it is the treasure of mermaids and in ancient times sailors often carried aquamarine to protect themselves from drowning. Aquamarine is said to be the Stone of Courage and is believed to instill bravery and fortitude.
citrine
Citrine is the clear yellow or golden form of the mineral quartz. As such it is related to amethyst which is the purple form of quartz.
Crystal healers describe citrine as a 'feel good' crystal. It can help banish negativity and deep gloom and inspire enthusiasm, originality, a positive outlook and feelings of self-confidence.
coral
Unlike most precious stones Coral is an organic gemstone. It is the skeleton formed by the individual polyps, plant-like animals, which make up a colony. Red and pink are the usual colours for coral. Now all virtually all coral is farmed.
emerald
Emerald is the most precious stone in the beryl group and has a hardness on Moh’s Scale of 7.5-8. Varieties of beryl have been considered gemstones since prehistoric times.The name emerald comes from the Greek smaragdos and just means “green gemstone”.
Crystal healers say that the refreshing green energy of Emerald revitalizes the body and provides inspiration. Emerald is also believed to enhance memory, to encourage patience, to calm the emotions and to eliminate negativity. Emerald is the birthstone for May and for those commemorating 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.
iolite
The name Iolite comes from the Greek ios, which means violet. Gem quality iolite approaches the blue colour of sapphire but it is the violet blue that is popular. The best specimens can rival high quality tanzanite in the saturation of their blue-violet hue. Crystal healers describe Iolite as a very psychic and mystical stone that facilitates visualisation. It is also believed to stimulate intuitive insights and to help you to express your true self.
onyx
Crystal healers describe Black Onyx as a soothing stone which helps alleviate fears and worries and promotes feelings of calm within your self and your surroundings. It is also believed to encourage stamina and vigour and the making of wise decisions.
opal
Opal is a variety of quartz but, whereas quartz is a crystalline form of silicone dioxide , opal is a solid gel and therefore relatively soft with a score of 5-6 on Moh’s hardness scale. It comes in many colours. Crystal healers say Pink Opal is a vibrant, uplifting, joy-bringing stone. It can help to bring the sweetness and lightness back into life and is good to use in times of stress.
peridot
Peridot is one of the few gemstones found in only one color. It is one of the "idiochromatic" gems, meaning its color comes from the basic chemical composition of the mineral itself, not from minor impurities, and therefore will only be found in shades of green. Peridot is bright golden green, but can vary to darker green or greenish yellow.
According to crystal healers, peridot is a powerful cleansing stone. “Its clear, fresh energy rejuvenates the whole body and gives the encouragement of renewal and a fresh start”. Peridot is the birthstone for August.
pearl
Pearls, unlike most gemstones which are formed from organic sources, are organic gemstones, that is formed from living things, either plants or animals. Natural or real pearls come mainly from oysters, although there are other bi-valve molluscs from which can produce them. Cultured pearls are produced by artificially introducing a foreign object into the fleshy part of oysters, which become coated in a similar manner to natural pearls. Pearls can be almost any shape, but round ones are generally more desirable.
QUARTZ ~ There are two main varieties of quartz of the same chemical composition, silicon dioxide, and similar physical properties. Macrocrystalline quartz is mostly transparent to translucent and, includes stones like: amethyst, aventurine, rock crystal, citrine, smokey quartz and rose quartz.
rose quartz
Rose Quartz is the pink form of the mineral quartz. Rose Quartz is a translucent or transparent pink crystal. It is known as the 'Love Stone' and is said to be the stone of unconditional love.
smokey quartz
Smoky quartz is a brown to black, smoky gray. Crystal healers describe Smoky Quartz as an extremely protective stone. “It protects against negative energies by gently dissolving any negative emotions it comes into contact with.”
rhodolite
Rhodolite is a type of garnet and tends to be lighter in colour than most other kinds of red garnet. It can be easily confused with ruby because of the similarity in colour.
The mixture of red and violet in rhodolites is very popular. Purple or purple-red is the most expensive and sought after colour for rhodolite.
Rhodolite is the birthstone for January.
ruby
Ruby is named after the Latin word "ruber" for red and is the usual name for transparent red corundum. Rubies range in colour from pink to an orange, purple or brown red, depending on the chromium and iron content of the stone.
It is very hard, having a hardness of 9 on Moh’s scale (diamond is 10 ).The price range of rubies is very large, ranging from under £1 per carat to many thousands of pounds per carat, depending primarily on colour, but also on brilliance.
Ruby is the birthstone for July.
ropaz
Topaz is historically one of the most important gemstones. The name is believed to have derived from the Greek work topazos or from the Sanskrit tapas meaning fire.  It has a high refractive index and a hardness of 8 (a diamond is 10). It comes in many colours, including colourless, brown, green, orange, red, pink and blue. Natural blue topaz is rare and most of the blue topaz seen has been formed through irradiation and heat treatment.
Crystal healers describe Blue Topaz as a very soothing and calming stone allowing you to distance yourself from stress and problems” by raising your vibratory rate and allowing you to rise above them”.
Topaz is the birthstone for November.
